No, no syllable count. Even the traditional haiku of Basho, Issa, yuso, never followed any strict syllable count. What we write nowadays is modern haiku. Lol.
5,7,5 is so inhibiting. If you read the great masters ‘ work , you will understand what I am trying to say. So is senryu. But that is mostly emotional or psychological poetry.
I have started reading some of it yassy and it is fantastic. I like the 5,7,5 format as it gets a thought down to a seed and then you can expand it back form there. The debate about haiku and senryu is also fascinating.

Thanks yassy. The 5,7,5 sequence is a modern interpretation. I have seen haiku written in a vertical line. A great form to study and play with 🙂
